Seoul ('sʌul) is the capital of South Korea and is located on the Han River in the country's northwest. The city is situated about 30 miles (~50 km) south of the North Korean border, also known as the de-militarized zone (DMZ). Seoul is an ancient city, having served as the historic capital of the Baekje Dynasty (18 BCE – 660 CE) and Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The city became the capital of South Korea following the establishment of the South Korean government in 1948. Designated the status of a Special City, Seoul is administered directly by the national government.
